Alpha-Lipoic Acid or ALA is an Omega 3 fatty acid which is involved in energy metabolism, it can be synthesised by the body itself in addition to being able to be consumed via certain foods in our diet as well as being used commonly as a supplement.

Unlike some fatty acids, ALA seems to be both water soluble and doesn’t need to be consumed with other fats in order to be properly absorbed or processed.

A naturally occurring compound, it was first discovered in the 1950s for its involvement in the Kreb’s cycle (a process of various reactions that allow aerobic life to create energy via respiration in the cell).

ALA as an Anti-Oxidant
Known to be able to inactivate reactive oxygen, ALA seems to acts as an ‘anti-oxidant’ to prevent damage from this reactive oxygen within the body which reduces the overall levels of oxidation.

Furthermore, Alpha-Lipoic Acid assist with the normal function of other anti-oxidants. For example, by having potent amounts of ALA in our system other anti-oxidants such as Vitamin C and Vitamin E can be regenerated more effectively, together having a synergistic like effect.

Energy Metabolism
ALA has a role to play in energy metabolism centering around The Krebs cycle (also known as the citric acid cycle). Specifically, ALA works in the actual mitochondria of the body’s cells to restore certain enzymes and increase their availability to produce energy.

Other Potential Benefits Include

  • Anti-inflammatory properties
  • Anti-ageing effects from reducing oxidant damage that lead to ageing
  • Aiding brain function (ALA is seen as a nootropic)

Dosages
A standard dose of Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) usually ranges from the region of 300-600mg.
