Produced by the body and works with the mitochondria of our cells during energy production, more specifically it is a component of the electron transport chain involved with creating the energy currency of the body – ATP (adenosine triphosphate). Coenzyme Q10 can be found in various foods such as fish, although only in relatively small amounts.

Coenzyme Q10, also known as:

 • CoQ10
 • Ubiquinol
 • Ubiquinone
 • Trans 2, 3-dimethoxy-5-methyl-6-decaprenyl-1
 • 4-benzoquinone

This molecule is vital for survival, though it doesn’t need to be supplemented as the body can produce it by itself, however, supplementation may indeed be beneficial for some. As we age, it is thought that our ability to produce CoQ10 is diminished and is, therefore, a common supplement with those who are looking to top up their levels as they age.

This fat-soluble vitamin is associated with blood flow improvement and blood vessel protection – these are thought to be some of the potential benefits of supplementing with CoQ10 due to the effects on preserving nitric oxide levels in the blood similar to the effects seen with resveratrol and grape seed extract.

There are various disease and conditions were taking certain drugs such as statin drugs for example that are known to deplete COQ10 levels which are when a doctor recommended supplementation may occur.

How to Take

A dose of around 90mg up to 200mg of CoQ10 is generally recommended although due to the price point of CoQ10 the lower amount is often seen as being the cost effective option and the most financially realistic. CoenzymeQ10 should be consumed with a meal to enhance absorption with it being a fat soluble molecule, doing otherwise is not advised as the absorption rate will be significantly reduced.

CoQ10 supplements can come in various forms, included Ubiquinone which is the oxidised form, ubiquinol which is the reduced form and a combination of both which is referred to as Total CoQ10.
