A mineral known for its anti-oxidant properties, it forms parts of certain enzymes including glutathione. It is an essential, trace mineral that can be found naturally in certain foods, the soil and in water although in small quantities.

Some of the key benefits include:

– Protecting against free radical damage
– Playing a part in a healthy metabolism
– Defending against inflammation
– Contributing to normal spermatogenesis
– Contributes to the normal function of the immune system

Dietary Sources of Selenium
There are certain foods containing forms of Selenium, they include Brazil Nuts, Eggs, Live, Tuna, Cod, Chicken, Sunflower seeds and various other meats.

Forms of Selenium
Forms of Selenium include selenocysteine, selenomethionine, and Se-methyl selenocysteine – these are selenonium acids.

Another includes selenomethionine, this is the main active dietary form.

Selenomethionine is also another form.
Boosting Immunity
It is thought that the benefits of Selenium include strengthening our immunity via reducing free radical damage within the body, this anti-oxidative effect also appears to have benefits on reducing the effects of ageing like other anti-oxidants.

Those who take part in an exercise regime generally have higher amounts of free radicals due to the stress and exertion put upon the body when exercising. Therefore taking in the healthy amount of antioxidants is recommended to combat these free radicals in addition to the general health benefits associated with foods and food supplements that are high in antioxidants, vitamins and minerals.

It’s worth noting that certain other anti-oxidants such as Vitamin E are thought to have synergistic effects with Selenium, heightening the effects more so.

How to Take
An overall intake for general health (from all sources) should range from around 200-300mg per day.
