Isotonic gels are easily digestible, quickly accessible, carbohydrate based gels with the addition of electrolytes that have been scientifically formulated to provide a supply of energy to the body.

These gels are intended to be taken by those who will benefit most – endurance enthusiasts and athletes who undertake prolonged exercise that can benefit from taking (in energy in the form of carbohydrate) to allow maintained performance and delaying delay fatigue to avoid the ‘bonk’ or ‘the wall’ which can occur around 90 minutes into an endurance event.

This sudden fatigue stems from the body’s reserves of glycogen in the muscles and liver being depleted, by supplementing during the exercise session with these easily accessible carbohydrate based gels they can give the body a direct fuel source to use meaning the glycogen stores don’t deplete as rapidly.

It’s advised that carbohydrates which don’t upset the stomach are ingested at regular intervals during a race to provide a steady flow of energy – by waiting until fatigue has set in may mean performance will suffer to a larger extent and the individual will have to get back to baseline both physically and mentally.

Terminology

To understand how Isotonic Gels work more specifically, let’s see what the word ‘isotonic’ actually means.
Isotonic: In order for a solution to be classed as isotonic it needs to have the same concentration of dissolved solutes as the cell fluid within the body, a tonicity of between 290-310 mmol/kg is typical.
In contrast to this, let’s see how not using ‘isotonic’ products can affect us\u2026
Hypertonic: When a solution is hypertonic, this means that it has a higher concentration of solutes than the fluid in the body. So water must be pulled from our cells to inside the gut and assist with the balancing of the concentration.
As the concentration must be altered this means the time it takes the body to access the energy is longer when compared to an isotonic concentration which doesn’t need to be altered.
Hypotonic: A hypotonic solution has a lower concentration of solutes compared to the cell fluid in the body. This means that water will leave the stomach quickly (as the concentration of water in the hypotonic solution is higher than the body) however there will not be much energy as some of the carbohydrate will be left behind.
Lightly Flavoured & Easy To Consume

So that stomach upset it avoided, Isotonic gels are designed to be easily consumed and lightly flavoured to minimise chances of gastrointestinal distress whilst exercising.
