Flax Seed oil is a great source of quality fats including the essential fatty acid Omega 3 and Alpha Linolenic Acid (ALA) which contributes to the maintenance of normal blood cholesterol levels.

In fact, Flaxseed Oil is one of the highest sources of the Essential Fatty Acid Linolenic Acid (an Omega 6 fatty acid), making it a great oil to consume to hit fatty acid nutritional targets.

A Bit More About Flax Seeds

Flax seeds have been in the diets of humans for some time, it’s thought they’ve been eaten for as long as 6,000 years.

Flax seeds can also be referred to as ‘linseeds’.

Flax seeds are small, brown or golden coloured seeds which are very common in many health conscious individuals for their plant based omega 3 fatty acids, specifically ALA.

For those who are on a plant based diet, Flax Seed Oil or Flaxseeds generally are a great source of Omega 3, though they do not contain EPA and DHA.

However, when another pair of carbon atoms gets added to the ALA via a process called elongation – via elongases enzymes, the ALA can become EPA. When another pair of carbon atoms are added, the EPA can be turned into DHA, though this process is thought to be inefficient.

How to Store Flaxseed Oil

Flax Oil which comes in a bottle once opened should be refrigerated. This is because once opened the oil begins to oxidise with the air, refrigeration slows down this process similar to how refrigeration works with regular food, avoiding the oil degrading quickly and becoming rancid and unusable.

Flaxseed Oil products may also come in capsules which are less susceptible to this due to being enclosed from the air, however, similarly, they should be kept in a cool, dry environment to maintain the integrity of the oils and fatty acids within them.
