Omega and EFA (essential fatty acids) products have become increasingly popular over time as more and more of us start to find out about the certain benefits that they may have to offer.

Omega and Essential Fatty Acids do come in various foods which can be including in our nutritional plan, they can also be supplemented with too. Depending on individual needs and circumstances will likely dictate which is the most effective method for each person.

For example, those who want a reliable, known amount of Omega 3 every day but don’t want to eat oily fish each day may benefit from supplementing with a certain Omega 3/fish oil supplement on the days when they don’t eat fish.

What Are Essential Fatty Acids?

An Essential Fatty Acid is simply a fatty acid that the body cannot produce by itself, two essential fatty acids exist which includes Alpha-Linolenic Acid (ALA) which is an Omega 3 fatty acid and Linoleic Acid (LA) which is an Omega 6 fatty acid.

You may also come across the term ‘conditionally fatty acid’ referring to certain fatty acids that become essential under certain conditions such as when the body is developing or when a certain disease is present.

Types of Omegas

There are 3 types of Omega fatty acids including; Omega 3, Omega 6 and Omega 9.

Each of these has different benefits to our body and can be found via various sources, here is a quick (but nowhere near complete) guide to these fatty acids.

Omega 3

A polyunsaturated fat, Omega 3 is probably the best known and most highly-rated Omega.

These are 3 forms of Omega 3 – EPA, DHA and ALA.

EPA (Eicosapentaenoic acid) – it’s the main function is to produce chemicals called eicosanoids which help the body to reduce inflammation.

DHA (Docosahexaenoic acid) – this makes up a significant part of our brain, around 8% and is important for normal brain development and function.

ALA (Alpha-linolenic acid) – mainly found in various plant sources, ALA is often used for energy by the body and can be turned into DHA and EPA although the process is thought to be largely inefficient.

Omega 6

Similar to Omega 3, Omega 6 is also made from polyunsaturated fatty acids.

Linoleic acid or ‘LA’ (a form of Omega 6) is found in many foods within the Western Diet.

Due to the number of these fats found in many foods such as poultry, eggs, nuts, cereals and oils supplementation is most likely required for most.

Certain Omega 6 fatty acids that are less common are GLA, CLA and ARA.

Omega 9

Non-essential fats, Omega 9 can be produced by the body and so supplementation is not seen as something of importance to most due to the abundance in most diets.

However, those looking for sources of Omega 9 should consider eating various nuts, seeds and oils such as olive oil.

Types of Supplement Available

These fatty acids discussed come in various shapes and forms. Including oil blends, pure oil forms, capsules and in various powders.

Choosing the type which is the most convenient for you which you can reliably use is advise.
