Made from the leaves of the Camellia sinensis plant, native to South East Asia, green tea was discovered about 4,000 years ago. Black, oolong and white tea also derive from the same plant, but are harvested and processed at different stages, producing varieties in flavour. Aside from being a refreshing beverage, green tea is said to possess numerous health benefits; one of these is its reported ability to induce fat loss. Therefore, taking green tea as a supplement can be an effective weight management product.

So, why is this? Well, green tea contains polyphenols – naturally occurring plant compounds, scientifically known as catechins. Of these, a specific catechin known as epigallocatechin-3-gallate, or EGCG, is found in high concentrations in green tea leaves, and it is this substance that has been associated with increased fat-burning. To produce black tea, leaves undergo fermentation, which destroys the majority of polyphenols. Hence, green tea is viewed as superior to its more widely consumed cousin.

EGCG has been shown to increase thermogenesis: the process of burning calories to generate heat. Additionally, it’s said to suppress the effects of catechol-O-methyltranferase – a type of enzyme that destroys a hormone required to metabolise fat, called norepinephrine. In this respect, green tea helps to keep levels of norepinephrine elevated, lending to greater fat-burning potential.

Additionally, the caffeine present in green tea is thought to work harmoniously with EGCG. As a stimulant, it can increase the body’s ability to burn calories following consumption \u2013 even during rest. Combined with EGCG, green tea makes for a potent metabolism-booster, and is suggested to notably increase the resting metabolic rate for a period of up to 24 hours. In other words, taking a green tea supplement can help you to burn calories long after you finish your workout!

Many swear by green tea as a health tonic, and there is apt to be good reason for this: it has been shown to help protect cells against oxidative damage, and support the immune system. As a custom drink of Japan, this could be one of the reasons behind the higher life expectancy of this region, coupled with low incidence of chronic disease.

Green tea capsules are incredibly convenient, delivering a concentrated source of EGCG and other polyphenols. For some brands, one serving can be equivalent to 3-4 cups of brew!
