Weight loss, or to be more specific – fat loss – is a common goal for both men and women.

Weight loss, or to be more specific – fat loss – is a common goal for both men and women. This terminology is preferable over the former; reason being, your body weight is comprised of all tissues collectively – including muscle and bone mass. When you’re following a weight loss programme, truly, it’s surplus body fat that you want to lose.

Successful fat loss can be achieved through good nutrition and a solid training routine. Reducing your carb intake offers an effective strategy in terms of fat loss. This encourages your body to burn its fat stores for energy instead of glucose (carbs) – the latter of which it does by default when carbs are prevalent in the diet. Adequate protein, plenty of healthy fats, and slow-release carbs can provide a nutritionally balanced solution.

In terms of exercise, often, there’s a lot of emphasis placed on cardio work; whilst this can certainly help to improve overall fitness, a weight-lifting routine can prove more effective. This helps to increase muscle mass, which in turn, can raise the metabolic rate, so that you burn calories even at rest!

In conjunction with the above, there are key supplements which can support weight loss and muscle preservation. These include the following:

  • Diet Protein

As a nutrient, protein can help to keep you fuller for longer, so you’re less likely to snack or crave ‘naughties’! Protein shakes help to bridge nutritional gaps between meals, and also support muscle growth and recovery. Added ingredients in diet protein can further enhance these effects. Green tea extract, CLA and l-carnitine are amongst these, since they’re believed to have a positive effect on the metabolism.

  • Fat-Burners

These contain a ‘magic’ combination of ingredients that act as a catalyst to fat loss. They work by helping to suppress the appetite, and supporting metabolic function, assisting the body in burning its fat stores for energy.

Many varieties contain ingredients that stimulate thermogenesis – an increase in calorie expenditure through the body’s heat production. Green tea, bitter orange peel, black pepper extract, and green coffee extract are reputed to deliver this advantage.

Many varieties also contain caffeine, to increase stamina and energy output, helping you to stick to an exercise regime.

  • CLA & Omega-3 Fatty Acids

Studies suggest in supplement form, CLA can help to increase the body’s fat-burning potential and help to maintain muscle mass. Omega-3s are also thought to stimulate thermogenesis, with the most potency coming from eicosapentaenoic acid (EHA), docosahexaenoic acid (DHA), sourced from oily fish.
