Alcohol Intoxication Causes A Drop In Immune Response

It seems that excessive intoxication can cause a compensatory drop in immune response. A study performed at Loyola University Health System saw study participants drink 4 or 5 shots of vodka. 20 mins after reaching peak intoxication their immune systems increased, however, when measured at 2 hours and 5 hours after alcohol consumption, their immune systems had become less active than ever before!

With the Christmas period still sort of in flow, it is no surprising then that many people become run down and get the classic ‘winter’ cold. However, with this study in mind, could this cold actually have more to do with the sheer quantity of alcohol that is all too often consumed over Christmas?… probably!
