Beef jerky is a convenient high protein snack which is an ideal addition to any diet aimed at promoting the development of lean muscle mass. Beef jerky is a dried meat snack which originates from Indians in North America who used to preserve buffalo meat by curing and smoking it. It was called ‘charqui’ which means to pull or cut something into strips. Over the years, the word charqui became jerky hence the food name we know today!

In addition to a healthy and balanced diet the sodium content of beef jerky should not be an issue. However, if you are concerned about this you can choose products which are flavoured with herbs and spices such as black pepper which have a reduced salt content. It is also possible to make your own beef jerky so that you know the exact ingredients you have used in your healthy snack.
