Could ‘Beer’ Become The Next Big Sports Drink?

‘See ya love, just popping to the pub for a sports drink

(said by NO ONE ever)

However, it seems that the above phrase could soon become reality…although good luck trying to convince your missus of that! Yep, beer could become far more socially acceptable for a health, sports and fitness enthusiast by the addition of sodium to a low alcohol beer. Research by Desbrow, Murray and Leveritt (2013) has looked at the potential to manipulate the alcohol and sodium content of beer on the replenishment of fluid levels after exercise.

The researchers found that a low alcohol beer with added sodium could feasibly be a beer tasting beverage that limits the diuretic effect of alcohol, limiting dehydration and potentially, increasing the efficiency of fluid replenishment!
