Did you know that the calf muscle at the back of the lower leg is actually made up of two muscles which are called the gastrocnemius and soleus. Therefore when you are looking to build up this area it is important to know there are different exercises which will work both muscles. What is the difference between both of these muscles? Well the gastrocnemius is actually positioned above the soleus and to work the two different muscles means a difference in stance.
To work your gastrocnemius your legs must be straight and therefore a standing calf raise is ideal to work this muscle. Make sure you are going through the whole range of motion of the gastrocnemius which means planter flexing and the lowering of the heel when raising. To work your soleus you must have your legs bent, so performing an exercise seated is great for this. Again, performing the exercise the same way as above ensuring you work the whole muscle through its complete range of motion.
Use both techniques to work your calf muscle to the max and notice the difference.... You can thank me later ;)
