As Spring slowly reaches us and the bad weather comes to a halt (fingers crossed,) your bulking season may also be coming to a close. Does brighter and warmer weather mean trimming up and showing off your six packs? Do you associate this time of the year with more cardiovascular based workouts and paying more attention to what you eat? Will you perform more abdominal exercises rather than worry about max lifts so that you look great for the summer? If you are reading this and relating to it, continue to read on as I have some great ideas to help you stay in shape for 2014 :)
Most importantly is going to be the transition from eating a large amount of calories to restricting yourself of them. You may be used to eating large amounts and of what ever you want so long as it has protein and carbohydrates with every meal. From this point on you are going to need to watch what you eat and perhaps have a cap off point. The good news is that you can still make muscular gains even when you are keeping everything lean. Keeping what you eat healthy and balanced will help you sharpen your abs and show off more of your lean, aesthetic physique.
Another area you might want to look at changing is your workouts you put yourself through when you are in the gym. During the bulking season you may have been lifting heavy weights and only performing low repetitions to enhance strength and power. As you possibly lower your calorie intake it might make it harder for you to lift as much so swapping your routine may help. Instead of lifting heavy weights with low repetitions you might want to consider introducing super sets, drop sets, pyramid sets into your workouts. This will help increase your work rate and heart rate as you will ultimately rest less during your sessions and the likelihood of your metabolism increasing is high.
What Supplements To Use
The first supplement you will need to change is switching from a mass gainer to a regular whey protein. Using something like Optimum Health Ultimate Whey protein is a great start and this is our most cost effective protein too. Making sure you meet your protein requirements daily is a great way to ensure you keep a ripped physique throughout the whole of the summer. Other supplements like multivitamins and branched chain amino acids should also be staples in your supplement stack. These products will help keep your immune system fully functional and help build lean muscle tissue.
Ignore The Scales
Finally, make sure you ignore what the scales tell you as your weight is just a number and stick to what you see in the mirror. Take photographs of your physique too so that you can critique them and see what areas you need to work on. Many of the great aesthetic fitness models and body builders in today's industry take photographs and analyse them. Be hard on yourself so that you achieve a better physique and make sure you work on your weaker areas.
Getting lean and having a six pack doesn't just mean perform endless amounts of cardiovascular exercise and forget about hitting the weight area. Resistance training helps build lean muscle mass and since this helps burn fat it is crucial to keep it up and not adopt just a 'cardio only' approach!
