Beta- alanine is an amino acid which buffers your blood, this means it acts like a sponge soaking up excess hydrogen ions which are responsible for making the blood more acidic when exercising. This usually leads to the familiar muscle burn and cramps associated with intense physical activity, so by reducing the acidity of the blood you enable more oxygen to reach the muscle, as well as improving muscle endurance. Beta-alanine is converted to Carnosine, a similar buffer to beta-alanine that helps to mop up acid protons inside the muscle.
When should you take Beta-alanine?
Take Beta- alanine for several weeks in order to reach a saturation point in the body and maximise its effects. Nitrate gels and Beet It Beet root shots can be consumed during exercise to help maximise endurance and performance.
