It is refreshing to hear that the UK’s scepticism of sugar dense beverages such as Coca- cola and Pepsi has caused a decline in sales in recent years. The revelation that a single can of cola can deliver around 5+ teaspoons of sugar prompted Coca- cola to take action, but with increased concern over potential long term effects of artificial sweeteners, they have now tried to address this with Stevia. Stevia is produced from the leaves of a plant making it more desirable, however it does leave a slight bitter after taste in some people’s mouths (although not all). So Coca- cola Life appears to be the happy medium they have settled on for the time being, although they are investing millions of pounds into research in the hope that it will reveal another way of sweetening their beverage that doesn’t distort their legendary taste.
