Eating This On A Diet Will Do You More Harm Than Good...

Have you recently put yourself on a diet because your Summer holiday has come round sooner than expected and now you need to lose some weight? Have you resulted in seriously reducing your calories in an attempt to do this? Are you replacing meals for sachets of chicken noodle soup or the likes of? You know the ones I mean, those sachets of powder that you tip into a mug and then fill with hot water? The below picture shows exactly what I am referring to...

Why Are These Not Good For You

Let's be honest now, if you think that you are going to lose body fat by seriously reducing calories we need to go back to the basics (which I will cover a bit later.) For now though, let's have a closer look why these sachets of soup for lunch and dinner or any time of the day are really not that good for you. For starters, most of these contain as MANY as 41 calories per sachet and offer amazing nutritional value like 0.8g of protein and 0.2g of fibre (sarcasm should be detected by now.) Replacing your meals with these soups will only result in you losing weight and not fat from your body.

Short Term

In the short term you may think this is good. Many of you will set out on a diet in order to lose weight because you think by doing so will improve your shape. To some extent you are correct but what happens when you reach a plateau? What happens when you reach a sticking point in what you are doing and you can no longer shift any more weight, or lose body fat? Then what? Do you lower calories even more? Do you skip another meal? The reality of it is, at this stage you are more likely to give up because you haven't seen the results you have wanted. Here is why....

Nutritional Value

There really is no nutritional value in this sachets other than the fact you are using water to mix it, so at least you are getting fluids in. Have a look for yourself and check the ingredients which are inside. In case you don't have a packet to hand, here they are listed below...

  • 33% Pasta
  • Maltodextrin
  • Sugar
  • Starch
  • Salt
  • Flavourings
  • Flavour Enhancers
  • Dried Veg
  • Fat
  • Yeast Extract
  • Palm Oli
  • Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil
  • Parsley
  • Black Peper
  • Dried Poultry
  • Citric Acid
  • Garlic Concentrate

And..... Take a deep breath in and out. Just imagine for a second here, assembling those ingredients on your kitchen table to cook with, 100% chance you actually wouldn't would you? So why are you putting this into your body? I said before that you need to go back to the basics right? Well, this is what I mean, here is a good place to start...

Any guesses as to what this means, BMR? It means your Basal Metabolic Rate and it basically means the amount of calories you burn if you were to lay in bed all day and do nothing, literally nothing! It's the amount of calories your body needs for you to breathe and carry out functions by your vital organs such as your heart, liver, kidneys etc etc. To work out your BMR it is a simple calculation you can do online with a BMR Calculator. It is your height, weight, age and gender that gives you a total amount of calories you need to make sure you eat just to function. Now, the calculator doesn't take into consideration intricate details like your hormone function, lifestyle habits, work commitments, exercise etc! So once you know your BMR you then need to factor in all the other things you do in a day.

To sum it up, if you are eating well below your BMR at this stage in your diet then you will NEVER see your desired weight. All you are currently doing is harming your body and it will not be functioning properly for you to lose more weight/body fat.

There is always a way of solving these things and in your first instance it will be making sure you have your BMR figured out. When you know this number and have worked out your other daily calories you need, you can then start working out how many calories you can drop. Remember, a really important tip when losing weight is that you need to EAT MORE to LOSE MORE. Eating less, using these crappy sachets of nothing will only give you more setbacks.

Start eating regular meals throughout the day which SUPPORTS your lifestyle and will help you to lose more body fat. If you have an active lifestyle then you are probably going to need more calories than someone who sits at a desk for 8 hours a day. Make the correct choices for your lifestyle and get out of your plateau by eating more and not starving your body.
