There is no question of a doubt that using a foam roller is a great, self inflicting exercise which is going to release your muscles of any knots and aches. However, there is a time when using the foam roller isn't such a good idea and this is when you are ill. Rolling your body when you have an infection can spread it around the body, causing you to remain ill for longer periods of time. So if you have a cough or cold, it is best to stay away from the rolling until you feel better :)
