So what do I mean by ‘order of ceremony’, and where is the relevance to food and supplementation? Well it basically refers to what you eat and in what order during a meal. Take breakfast as an example, you might have some porridge with flaxseed, coconut oil and cinnamon along with a protein shake and a cup of coffee…but in what order would you consume these items?
Upon waking you are usually in a fasted state and consequently very catabolic, so the order of ceremony and first to be devoured should be your rapidly absorbing whey protein shake so that it hits your stomach first. This allows protein to feed the muscles as soon as possible, whereas if it was consumed after the porridge then there would be a physical barrier (in the shape of oats) slowing the protein absorption. So start with your whey protein, follow it up with the slow releasing porridge and give yourself that coffee fix after.
