Is It REALLY Good For Your Health To Be Overweight?

A systematic review of many studies released this year made waves in the health and fitness world when it contradicted everything we have been told so far. The review released figures showing that those with a BMI classed as overweight were associated with a lower risk of mortality. However, before the nation gets carried away and our waist lines expand even more, it is important to note a few things.

Firstly, BMI is an inaccurate measurement to some degree. It does not take body composition into account and therefore classes athletic and muscular individuals in the same overweight category as those with excessive amounts of body fat and unhealthy lifestyles. Secondly, it does not take into account health, age, genetics, lifestyle habits (ie smoking) or fitness level. While a little extra body fat is not life threatening, it is important to note that obesity is NOT healthy.

While this study has merit, my advice is not to take this as an excuse to lead an unhealthy lifestyle, your body will not thank you for it.
