Google’s Zeitgeist 2013 : Most Popular Searches Include Crossfit & Kettlebell Workouts

Zeitgeist literally means ‘spirit of the times’ and therefore defines the spirit or mood of a particular period based on trends, and (in Google’s case) searches and hits. So what did the 2013 period have in store, well most people searched for the following subject matters:

-         Birth of Prince George

-         New frontiers in the solar system

-         The passing of Baroness Thatcher

-         The passing of Paul Walker

-         The passing of Nelson Mandela

-         The asteroid collision with earth

-         Harlem shake

-         Oscars

-         First pro NBA Athlete say’s he’s gay

-         One Direction (you know you love it haha)

-         All German Champions League Final at Wembley!

-         Andy Murray wins Wimbledon

As you can see, 2013 was a year filled with significant deaths and a particularly memorable birth, as well as some quite historic victories in the sporting world. With the sporting world in mind then it’s worth pointing out that some of the most popular searches on Google were to do with sport, health and fitness. The 2013 zeitgeist found that those people looking to get fit, healthy and take part in activities such as High Intensity Interval Training (HIIT), improve their mid-section, build their biceps, or get into one of the fastest growing sports in the UK that is Crossfit, were the most active on Google!

Most interesting of all perhaps is the world renowned HIIT training program Insanity, founded by Shaun Thompson in 2009, still receiving the most searches on Google for 2013! So it seems that people are searching for new and old forms of training, with other popular searches including:

1.)   Insanity workout

2.)   CrossFit workouts

3.)   Ab workouts

4.)   Bicep workouts

5.)   7-minute workout

6.)   Kettlebell workouts

7.)   Shoulder workouts

8.)   Back workouts

9.)   Plank exercises

10.) TRX Workouts

Fitness and exercise, and in particular HIIT forms of exercise seem to be topping the list amongst the UK public. This is validated by many publications stating how HIIT is one of the most effective ways to burn fat whilst maintaining muscle mass! Crossfit has grown exponentially in terms of its popularity, people are signing up to the Crossfit gyms all around the country in the hope that they can achieve an overall state of fitness and muscularity, tone, definition, and of course functional strength. The 2013 zeitgeist demonstrates the changes in the UK citizens current mindset, fitness is fashionable (thank goodness), knowledge is broadening, and Google are having a major part to play in this…so let’s hope the impending 2014 months have the same in store!
