Saturday, 17th May, 2014 was scorcher in more ways than one…the weather was amazing reaching highs of around 25 degrees celcius, the muscle clad guys and girls were even hotter, and as if to achieve the optimal balance, the protein shake on tap was ice cold! What more could health, nutrition, fitness and supplement experts and enthusiasts wish for!? Myself and Scott were in and amongst the leading experts, bodybuilders, fitness models and athletes for our industry, we were quite literally…in our element.
From the moment the doors of the NEC in Birmingham opened, Me and Scott were there! As we entered the arena we came to Jay Cutlers stand, the queue for the 4 time Mr Olympia was small at this point so we made the most of this rare opportunity. After getting a snap with the big BIG man himself we continued to navigate the arena in a clockwise manner, making our way through the crowd and trying our best to absorb as much of the atmosphere at this early stage before the masses arrived. The stands were aplenty ranging from leading brands such as USN, Optimum Nutrition, Grenade, CNP, Muscle Pharm and Reflex, right through to new and relatively unheard of brands including ‘Effectiv Sports Nutrition’ and the fast growing ‘Protein Freak’ range.
Staying abreast of information
There were some opportunities throughout the day to sit back, pull out a note pad and listen to what other industry experts had to say on subject matters ranging from carbohydrate ingestion and timings, protein requirements and useful sources, through to omega oil blends and the optimal ratios of DHA and EPA. There were obviously some informed members of the audience because some really insightful questions were being raised that even had the expert panel pondering the answers. It was refreshing to see that the industry was constantly being questioned, that boundaries were regularly being pushed and experts were having to stay contemporary and employ a holistic attitude to their craft. Was there any ground breaking revelations, no…but it wasn’t meant for that, this is left to the white coats and professors in universities so that we as Dietitians and nutrition experts can disseminate the information to you as the consumer.
World Fitness Championships : BODYPOWER
Each year Bodypower hosts a bodybuilding and fitness model competition exhibiting some of the finest physiques around. Many of the competitors in the WFC fitness model category were previous champions, this made for some hot competition for our very own Scott Riches who decided to enter the comp as a last minute.com decision. It was clear during the earlier heats that competition was very tough this year, with a considerable overlap between muscle model and fitness model competitors on stage. So it was great that Scott got up there and showcased his impressive frame, whilst also exhibiting exactly what a strict, balanced training regime, good diet and indomitable desire can do to ones body!
Yes, the weather was cracking which made for a pleasant lunch break sat out in the sun, but the flip side of this was that it was bloody warm in the NEC arena! Hydration was key in this heat and I was guilty of getting that one wrong, but my muscle were in a protein surplus after all that protein that was quite literally on tap! As an expo the day came up trumps, all the names were there, stands were varied and dynamic including Crossfit and powerlifting specific stands, martial arts stands, strong man stands and of course sport supplement and nutrition stands. With the Friday no longer being a trade day the crowds were minimised compared to years gone by making it a more pleasurable and relaxed experience. Free samples were flowing and so too was the chit chat and networking…this years Bodypower expo really did deliver in my opinion. We will be bringing you much more info on some of the ‘must have’ products and recent revelations as well as compiling some unbiased, informed and dynamic product reviews for your perusal.
