For those of you who love their Hazelnut chocolate spreads, you'll shudder at the recent news that spreads such as Nutella may be reducing the amounts they produce due to the shortage in Hazelnuts. This shortage is a result of poor weather conditions in Turkey which has ruined farmers crops, in turn prompting a 60% price increase. So why can't we just get more Haselnuts from elsewhere...well, 70% of the entire worlds Hazelnut crop is grown near Turkey's Black Sea coast, and this particular crop was bombarded by heavy hail and frost back in late March. Ferrero, the company behind Nutella and Ferrero Roche are definitely feeling the effects of this shortage, with the company buying 25% of the world's Hazelnut stocks! So if you are a lover of the chocolatey spread then you can either brace yourself for higher costs, or get out there and stock up now!
