The answer is no, although hemp protein is derived from the hemp seed, which is taken from a variety of high growing cannabis plants, the seed itself does not contain the psychoactive properties found in the cannabis leaves. There are some variants of the cannabis sativa herb that are used as a drug, commonly known as marijuana, which have psychoactive compounds. The plant with these so called psychoactive compounds are derived from the low growing varieties, and these generally contain higher amounts of tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) which give cannabis the ‘drug’ effects.
So should you be concerned about the ‘Hemp’ leaf present on some Hemp Proteins packaging, don’t be, because even though hemp is marijuana’s cousin, hemp seeds contain no THC and are therefore NOT like the drug that sadly plagues the streets here in the UK.
