This afternoon the city of Liverpool came to a standstill in remembrance of the 96 football fans who died in the Hillsborough disaster back in 1989. As a sign of recognition the cities Church bells were tolled 96 times at 3:06pm, the time that the match was abandoned due to the events. An estimated 24,000 people attended the memorial service at the Anfield Stadium, attendees included players, staff and representatives of the club.
It’s a sad fact that people die on a daily basis, but it was the unexpected nature of this tragedy that really made the Hillsborough disaster so shocking. It occurred at a location that was supposed to be fun and safe, during a match that was in many respects like any other…and yet people tragically lost their lives.
May we also take this opportunity to recognise and remember those 96 that died on this infamous day.
