As morbid as it sounds, this is apparently a real possibility for the human race. Yes, humans have survived countless close calls including World Wars, countless volcano eruptions, earth quakes, floods and asteroid collisions, we’ve even got around major pandemics such as the Spanish Flu and the Black Plague! However, Scientists and Mathematicians at Oxford University acknowledge that we may be able to survive natural disasters and world wars, but things are different now. Yes the chances of Earth being hit by an asteroid large enough to cause extinctive repercussions and/or suffering a super volcanic eruption are very low…but the new risks we face are completely different and unique!
The professors explain that we now run the risk of developing something (both deliberately or accidentally) that we do not have the capacity to keep under control. Biology and engineering are merging, nanotechnology and working at molecular and atomic level are progressing at a frightening rate exposing us to the unknown…something we may not be able to control.
