This ban is set to last until at least December 2015, but where did this ban come from and why was it introduced? The UK imports around £6.3m worth of Indian mangoes per year, but since 2013 almost 207 shipments of non- European pests were found in fruit and vegetables from India! This comes at a bad time for the Federation of Indian Export Organisations (FIEO) as the Premium Alphonso mangoes are in season as the ban comes into force…these particular mangoes are very popular in the UK. The Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (Defra), are working closely with the Indian authorities and the European Commission to help rectify this problem and get the ban lifted.
