Being better, healthier and a fitter person is more than a diet, it is more than going to the gym a few times a week and it is more than having a protein shake immediately after your workout. This is a way of life, this is a lifestyle that you need to stick to and keep going for the rest of your life. Ok, so I see this so many times where you will want to change your body, you want to lose weight? You want to get fitter? You want to gain leaner muscle on your body? But how many actually put the work in? How many of you really want it? How many of you give up after a few months, or set yourself a strict deadline, '' If, in eight weeks I haven't got the body I see on a fitness magazine then I'm not doing this anymore''?? Sounds ridiculous? Well, I was only speaking to someone in the gym at the weekend where I asked how progress was going (in between my set). The reply I got was this '' Yeah, training is ok, free weights bore me slightly but I want a good body, so I am going to give myself another 6 weeks and if I haven't got the body I want then I'll go back to just cardiovascular exercise''. At this point, I'm thinking of the above statement, this is a lifestyle and you want get these quick results within 6 weeks. I asked him, ''well, what body do you want to aspire to look like?'' He replied quickly, without hesitation, ''Like the ones in the fitness magazines''....
This person was giving himself 6 weeks to achieve a physique others train years for. It's no surprise, as soon as this was said I moved swiftly back to completing my next set. I couldn't go into a discussion about the importance of continuing after 6 weeks and that this was a short time frame he was giving himself to achieve his goals, I needed to complete my workout which was more important!! But let me tell you now, why it is so important to keep it going and not give up.
So, most of you probably realise by now, I'm a big fan of motivating and inspiring you guys to achieve whatever goals you want to achieve. But you have to be realistic. You have to say to yourself, if you really, and I mean really want to achieve whatever goal it is you want, you have to put in the time and effort.
Look at the New Year for example, how many of you started to exercise due to a resolution you made? That's great, but how many of you are still exercising? How many of you are exercising because you are going on holiday soon but then when you get back after your holidays you fail to continue to exercise? How many of you resort to a certain diet to lose weight? But then when you come off the diet you put the weight back on and you are more depressed than when you first went on the diet? What I'm saying is this, you have to be consistent with your approach to staying fit and healthy. It's a lifestyle which means you have to be committed to it. This doesn't mean you have to miss out on things with your friends, family and loved ones.
