Strokes, or cerebral vascular accidents (CVA), to use their proper name are on the rise. The growing number of individuals suffering from this potentially life changing ailment is concerning researchers and health professionals in the UK. The Global Stroke Association reports 13,500 stroke cases a year, whilst approx 128,175 people live with stroke in London alone! As for England, approx 107,300 strokes occur a year and a massive estimated 1 million people living with it and any associated morbidity.
Recent studies are finding a potential curative role for lycopene, the cancer fighting antioxidant mainly found in tomatoes. Tomatoes are a particularly great food for fighting stroke because they contain 9 of the 14 main carotenoids the body needs to minimise the oxidative damage that might lead to stroke.
Lycopene has long been associate with its potential protection against cancer, and now it seems, it may have a role in fighting stroke too!
