Manny Pacquiao May Face Jail Time For Perjury…Come On Now, Really!?

We are all accountable for our actions, if we do something good then most people like it to be recognised, but if we do something wrong then this too may be recognised, but there are often repercussions that follow. This is the stark (and if you ask me, somewhat harsh) reality that Manny Pacquiao is facing… the man could face up to 5 years in jail!

Why all the fuss?

So what is this all about? Well according to The Sport Bible the failure of Manny to disclose a shoulder injury he was suffering from before the bout means he was breaching the pre- fight evaluation form he completed. Understandably Manny felt that an ache or pain is part of the game, and consequently didn’t mention it on the form. Evidently Manny now has to undergo rotator cuff surgery which may see him out for 9-12 months, a stint that is likely to rule out any rematch between him and Mayweather.

It is understood that fighters are legally obligated to be truthful on their pre- fight evaluation form, and any deliberate attempt to cover up an injury before a fight could lead to legal action. I understand that there are health and safety implications here, and that rules are rules and must be respected, however I struggle to see how the possible punishment fits the crime in this instance. How on earth does one put a champion boxer away for trying to be tough and put an injury out of his mind, and let another champion boxer (Mayweather) physically abuse in excess of 5 women, including the Mother of his children (which his young son witnessed) and do little more than a few months in jail and pay a fine of just $4000. I am most definitely not trying to detract from Mayweather’s talents, nor am I trying to make this about him, however I do feel that there are gross injustices in this world, and if Manny does ANY time for this oversight on his part, then that has to rank as one of the worst!

Was Manny Accountable?

Did Manny’s choice to fight with a bad shoulder result in a below par bout, many people argue that the so called ‘fight of the century’ was a bit of a disappointment, could this have been a result of Manny’s inability to use his injured arm? Of his own admission, he was fighting Mayweather with one arm having sustained a significant rotator cuff tear in the build up to the fight, so were we all robbed of a proper fight under fair conditions, maybe, Manny knew what he was doing especially when he started using the shoulder as an excuse for losing. However I defy anyone to go into a sporting event 100% fit, with no injury whatsoever, it just doesn’t happen - so get off the guys case!
