Nature or Nurture… Does a person become great at something based solely on their genetic make-up, or is it more to do with the up- bringing they have? It’s that big question again, but one thing that appears to be for sure is that a mentor is useful, and when that mentor is arguably the greatest boxer of all time, and then that mentor also turns out to be your father, then you’re in with a good shout of becoming pretty proficient at boxing. Agree with this or not, one thing that is non- negotiable is the obvious talent of Muhammad Ali’s daughter Laila Ali. Such is her talent and evident self- confidence (no surprise considering who her father is), that Laila has called out undisputed UFC champ Ronda Rousey.
Since Ronda Rousey’s record breaking title defence a few weeks back, it is safe to say that she is more than up for the bout, however it all depends on whether she wants to go ahead. Ronda, after all, has nothing to prove to anybody, she is the champ in arguably the most popular combat sport on the planet, and despite Laila’s undoubted ability (and being the respective champ in her field), she would be the one with something to prove stepping up against the all-round talent that is Ronda Rousey. True to boxing’s ‘trash talking’ nature, Laila has attempted to goad Rousey with some audacious claims that she could be the one to end her reign.
Both the best in their fields
There is no question that both of these athletes are leaders in their respective fields with Laila boasting a 24-0 lead in her boxing career. Laila Ali admits that is difficult to compare boxing to MMA, the dynamics are very different, but with comments such as:
‘no women can beat me, period. She’s like the size of my daughter… my 3- year- old’.
There is no doubt she fancies putting this theory to the test. Who would come out on top, my money would be on Rousey due to her ground work, and there is no doubt she is bright enough not to enter into a stand up fight with a talented boxer…least of all the daughter of Muhammad Ali!
