There are already a number of research papers which associate moderate intake of red wine with a number of health promoting benefits including the reduction of blood pressure and LDL cholesterol. Now it would appear that these benefits may also cross over into the sporting world, giving athletes a performance enhancing testosterone boost.
Testosterone is a naturally occurring steroid hormone which can increase muscle mass, boost stamina and speed up recovery. Athletes are banned from taking on excess testosterone to boost levels in order to gain a competitive edge.
Not only is red wine linked with boosting natural testosterone levels, it could also allow athletes to beat the anti-doping system. Compound Quercetin present in red wine blocks an enzyme known as UGT2B17 which is responsible for monitoring testosterone levels and transportation of the steroid hormone to the kidneys for excretion.
