What’s with the hype behind coconut oil?
Well, the oil extracted from the kernel and/or meat of matured coconuts are high in Medium Chain Triglycerides (MCT’s) which are thought to be cardioprotective as well as useful to overall health, wellbeing and weight loss! MCT’s include Lauric acid, Capric acid, Caprylic acid and Myristic acid, and these types of fatty acid are inherently lower in total calories, are not so readily stored in the body as fat, and trick the body into burning more fat than it ordinarily would. Coconut oil does contain saturated fat (the dangerous fat IF consumed in excess), but despite the bad press saturated fat gets, it is the amount that people consume that appears to be the problem. A large proportion of the British persons saturated fat intake comes from processed meats, confectionary and red meats, which are inherently higher in calories!
