Product Review: Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Gainer

Adding on muscle for most of us can be pretty tough! Even if we go really hard at the gym for long periods of time, it can take a while for development to come.  We gain weight from stimulating the muscle for growth and eating quality calories to facilitate the growth of the muscle...so if you’re finding it tough to add size then a quality gainer may be the solution for you!

A quality gainer, delivers good ingredients and plenty of calories too…

Now let’s take a closer look at the Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Gainer and see how it holds up.

Ingredients

Protein

The Protein Blend used by the ON Gold Standard Gainer focuses on forms of Whey and Milk Protein, including; Whey Protein Concentrate, Milk Protein Concentrate & Hydrolysed Whey Protein Isolate - packing a mighty protein punch of 55g p/serving.

With these particular sources having excellent amino acid profiles and differing rates of digestion, we get a winning combination. As you may know, protein helps to keep us feel full/satiated, meaning once we’ve consumed a serving of the ON Gold Stand Gainer it’s almost like consuming a meal - keeping us fuller for longer than gainers that use just one (more quickly digested) protein source.

Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates are a great source of energy largely because they are so easily accessible to the body as a fuel source. It’s worth adding that certain carb sources are better than others too, why?

Well, certain carb sources contain more vitamins and minerals than others, plus then there’s taste...some just don’t taste good in large qualities! Whilst we shouldn’t buy a product just for the taste, taste is still hugely important, who wants to drink a gainer that tastes awful? #Nobody

ON has used their Quality Carb Complex, consisting of; Oat Flour, Potato Starch & Pea Starch. These carb sources are some of the higher end sources of carbohydrate meaning you’re getting more of the vitamins and minerals along with the calories from the carbohydrates, in line with the high end image the packaging presents to us.

Fat Sources

The fat sources used for the ON Gold Standard Gainer include MCT powder (Medium Chain Triglycerides) and Ground Flaxseed, both of which are premium fat sources. That said, this product doesn’t focus on fats to deliver the 763 calories p/serving, per 100g there is just 5.8g of fat.

Taste & Texture

Gainers tend to have relatively large serving sizes in addition to having a thick consistency compared to regular protein shakes.

Texture wise, this is one of the best gainers we’ve tried largely thanks to the mixability being so good, a really good result from Optimum Nutrition here.

The flavour we focused on here is the Colossal Chocolate, and it tastes great...a solid chocolate flavour that we can get behind.

Who Is The ON Gainer Ideal For?

Those wanting to add in more calories to their nutritional program ought to consider a gainer such as this, purely because it’s so easy to get in a good amount of quality calories in a short space of time.

If premium ingredients are something that interest you in a gainer too, the ON Gold Standard Gainer was made for you - few Gainers use such high quality ingredients.
