What is Collagen?

Collagen is a protein naturally found in the human body, in our skin, joints, tendons and more. It makes up to 30% of the protein in our body and 70% of the protein within our skin. Collagen levels decline with age, which is why you often hear it referred in skincare and anti-wrinkle products.

Whey or Collagen? Unlike whey or casein which are sourced from milk, collegen protein is sourced bones, skins, and cartilage of animal. Peak DNA Diet Collagen uses fish and bovine, marine collegens are particularly well absorbed due to their smaller particle sizes. Collagen is actually more abundant in some essential amino acids, namely glycine, proline, and hydroxyproline, than whey or casein, giving it many benefits for health and muscle building. Many people also find that it is better digesting, unlike whey which can cause bloating. Please note that Diet Collagen does contain milk and is unsuitable if lactose intolerant.

We would suggest a whey isolate around workouts (fast digesting, complete spectrum of amino acids) and a collegen protein at other times of the day, such as in your coffee with a healthy protein-fat breakfast, for health benefits.

Benefits of Supplementation

Joints. A 24 week study on athletes with joint pain related to sport found evidence to support collagen supplementation aiding joint health and potentially reducing the risk of joint deterioration in a high-risk group (Clark et al., 2008). The reduction in discomfort during training may increase performance and longevity in sport. In older populations, collagen supplementation has been suggested as a possible treatment for pain and arthritis. Like with skin applications, some of these issues are associated with the age-related decline in natural collagen. Consider use alongside other anti-inflammatories such as turmeric.

Skin. Collagen adds elasticity to the skin, giving it a youthful, healthy look. Collagen may also help to reduce the look of cellulite! It is thought that supplementing collagen will encourage the body to increase natural production. More research is needed to determine just how much benefit collagen has for beauty when taken in this form, as it will be broken down pretty quickly by the digestive system, but fans of it have reported improved skin, hair and nails.

Gut. Collagen is used to line the digestive tract, so it makes sense that it can be a great supplement to manage conditions such as leaky gut. Studies have found decreased collagen levels in individuals with digestive imbalances. Collagen is high in the amino acid glutamine which plays an important role in strengthening the gut lining by fueling the cells lining the mucosa of the small intestine and balancing mucus production.

Muscle building. Collagen is high in amino acids such as glycine which are important for performance and recovery. Glycine compliments creatine well by improving absorption. If you aren't already supplementing creatine, you should be! 5g per day, every day, is the ideal dosage for most.
