Protein Supplements for Weight Loss

If you’re looking to lose a few pounds, then Protein Supplements are high on the agenda. First up, I just want to clarify that protein isn’t just for bodybuilders – though this is probably the most common association.Sure, protein supports the growth and repair of muscle tissue, which is a must for those building mass. However, this isn’t the only benefit.

Below, I explain why upping your protein intake can help you to fit into those jeans effectively, and relatively pain-free.

Protein = Increased Satiety

Surely, the most important aspect of weight control is not feeling hungry. Eating a protein-rich breakfast such as eggs, for example, will do a far superior job of filling you up compared to cereal. Yes, the latter is quicker, but this supposed benefit is outweighed by its poor nutritional value.

If time constraints are your main problem, why not opt for a ready to drink protein? Grab a handful of walnuts, too. Or, if you can spare a couple of minutes, throw your protein powder in a blender with the milk of your choice; add a tablespoon of nut butter and some berries (or other fruit), and you’ve got yourself a super-charged smoothie! Some fitness experts recommend opting for casein powder, as it’s digested more slowly. However, studies show that whey has an equally positive effect on appetite.

Including protein foods with each meal can help to ensure this appetite-suppressing effect continues throughout the day. Snack-wise, protein shakes and bars (the low carb sort) can be a great option when you’re on-the-move.

An Increased Metabolic Rate

It would be rude not to mention this, of course. Protein is essential to the growth and repair of muscle tissue, which is metabolically active, i.e. it burns more calories than say, body fat. This means that in the long-run, protein can assist you in becoming a fat burning machine! Of course, a solid exercise routine is part of the recipe for success, but you knew this!

Bonus Ingredients!

Many protein supplements are designed to aid weight loss, as well as muscle building. For example, whey protein isolates are basically stripped of any remaining fat and carbs to bolster the slimming process. However, diet protein formulae usually contain bonus ingredients like green tea extract, l-carnitine and CLA; collectively, these can help to boost the metabolism, and lend a helping hand when it comes to fat loss.

You can also get bars with similar ingredients which save you the fuss of having to make a shake.

There’s a plethora of protein supplements now available, to help avoid boredom. After all, this is the second main reason people tend to ‘fall off the weight loss wagon’. Try protein desserts which are as good as eating mousse – if not better (plus, they’re more filling). Then there are protein cookies, brownies and other such delights; just be mindful of their carb content, and you’re good to go.

Here’s a little tip: pop a protein brownie or bar in the microwave for a few seconds, then eat it with a spoon. Yum!
