It seems it’s not just the food we eat that can travel thousands of miles before it reaches us, but (quite irrelevantly I concede) apparently our flowers come from a fair old distance too! Why am I blogging this exactly, well, in truth I don’t really know, but know this…the flowers you buy your partner this Valentines (chaps, flowers are a formality so DO NOT forget) will have actually travelled hundreds, and if not thousands of miles before reaching your loved one. An interesting little campaign found that a £195 bouquet of flowers had actually travelled 188, 447 miles from Colombia! The consequence... relatively scentless flowers in part because of the journey, but also because of an anti-blooming agent known as an ethylene blocker.
Don’t mention this to your loved one though, it’s a sure fire way to detract from what is actually an overpriced, scentless flower (call me a cynic :/ ). Romance however is still alive…Happy Valentines day all!
