So the amount of supplements you might think you need or in fact take could be too much and just because the big guy down at the gym takes it, doesn't mean you have to. I want to give you my top 5 supplements with an explanation on why I think you should be using them to maximise results for your hard work that you put in daily.
The Supplement Industry
There are literally hundreds of different supplements out there and the market is massive, you look one way and there are proteins, mass gainers, lean shakes etc. Look the other and you are blown away with the different creatines, bcaas, fat burners and so on, the list of supplements is endless. With there being so many to choose from it is easy to get lost in it all and be confused on what to use and when to use them. Seeing someone in great shape nowadays is usually associated with the question ''What supplements do you take''? The supplement industry has taken over and is a big part of health and fitness. So, let's take a look at what I take and what I recommend you have stocked up in your cupboards....
Make no mistake I make sure I consume enough protein through my diet but I always use a protein shake after my workouts. Whey protein in particular is the fastest absorbing protein on the market and I always opt for them over mass gainers. I want to stay athletic so I make sure I watch the amount of carbohydrates and calories that go into my body. If you want to put on weight, use a mass gainer, it is that simple. Whey Protein shakes are not only great for a protein hit as such, but they are also convenient. If you travel a lot then you can have one of these ready for when you need it. Also known as branched chain amino acids that play a very important role in muscle growth and recovery. Leucine, Isoleucine and Valine make up the three BCAAs and are building blocks of protein for your muscles. They are another staple in my supplement stack along with protein and I use this product throughout the day and whilst I train. I typically use them in powdered form rather than capsules just because I don't want to pop 10-12 pills per day.
One of the best supplements out there which I use to help me grow and boost my performance. Creatine is naturally produced when we workout so using a supplement is going to increase many things, especially endurance and strength. Make sure you go for a creatine monohydrate that you load with and then stick to for a number of weeks. I tend to cycle creatine but others don't, see what works best for you.
I train hard and most weeks I am working out every day, sometimes twice a day. Glutamine helps prevent muscle breakdown which is great when we are out of the gym, we won't to build and not break it down further. The main reason I use glutamine though is the way it protects your immune system by producing white blood cells to help fight infections. When you train hard you are more susceptible to illness, therefore you need to counter that as best you can, glutamine is great!
Finally, to back up the above, in order to achieve your results you have to be fit enough to train. Keep illness at bay by eating right and checking in with a multivitamin a day that makes sure you aren't missing out on important vitamins and minerals. I use one of these a day and sometimes I use Vitamin C tabs just for the extra boost against infections. Kick those bugs to the curb with a multivitamin each day, stay healthy!
Finally, the last thing to mention is that supplements are great but they are only there to supplement your diet. Make sure you are still eating the right foods and drinking enough water to keep your body healthy and your performance optimal.
