Is Being Over Weight Socially Acceptable?

Do you agree and think it is becoming more and more socially acceptable to be over weight in the UK? This post is in no way trying to offend anyone and is an overview of what is happening in the UK at this current time. Did you know in England most people are overweight or obese. 61.3% of adults and 30% of children aged between 2 and 15 are considered overweight. Did you also know that people who are overweight have a higher risk of getting type 2 diabetes, heart disease and other diseases. Being overweight can also make it difficult for people to work, move about and perform daily tasks. There is also a risk that self esteem will drop as you begin to not like what you see on the outside and this could lead to mental health problems.

Being Overweight

Now, although I have never been overweight, I do realise the implications it presents to people. But my first question I always ask is why have you become overweight? What has happened for you to put on weight? It is a hard subject to talk about and for some of you that are overweight reading this may have health problems or have had things happen which has led to this problem. But lets not sugarcoat the situation here and forget what it is ultimately doing to your health and happiness. Are you overweight because it is easier to find cheap, fast food alternatives to eat rather than having healthy food? Do you exercise? Or do you spend more time sitting at work, watching tv, surfing the internet?? Fear not, there is a solution!!

Making Healthy Choices

Did you know that health problems associated with being overweight or obese cost the NHS more than £5 billion every year. A staggering amount due to perhaps poor choices and not eating healthy or being active. Two simple and easy choices you can make which will help with your struggle in obesity is eating HEALTHY and MOVING more. I am not saying you have to be the next Olympic athlete or hardcore gym fanatic but you will need to take part in some form of exercise a week to work your body. You will also need to eat more healthy foods and less fast food, sugary and processed foods that aren't giving you any nutritional benefits. This means swapping pizzas and chips for vegetables, meat, pasta or rice etc. By making smarter choices with your eating and exercise habits will help your body to lose weight.

The Effects of Being More Healthy

I mentioned above that for many people who are overweight it isn't just the external issues they have to face but it is also what is happening on the inside. For these people there are mental challenges you face everyday. Some days you might feel depressed by the way you look and you might not want to go out as a result of this. A big benefit of leading a healthier lifestyle is the release of endorphin's within your body that is released which will make you feel great. When you start to feel great you will want to do more things outside of your home which will also make you feel great. The knock on effect from just starting this is massive and each and everyone of you needs to start doing something about it.

Seek Advice

The truth however is that I could give up at any point and think to myself what is the point in leading a healthy lifestyle. What is the point of exercising and looking after my body when I know full well that the NHS will look after me. What Can You Do?

Next time you enter into the supermarket I want you to fill your shopping trolley with vegetables, fruit, meat etc. I want you to cut back on the sugary foods, processed foods, fizzy drinks and other rubbish that is not doing your body any good. I also want you to exercise and not sit down as much. Instead of driving to the local shops, walk. Use your car less, sit less and become more active. Join a gym or go on walks for 30 minutes 3 times a week which will help increase blood flow, increase circulation, reduce inflammation of your joints, work your muscles, reduce the risk of getting ill, reduce the risk of cancers and most of all make you feel HAPPY. 

As a footnote to this post. I wrote this to inspire and motivate you if you are struggling to begin a new lifestyle. Remember, you don't have to be strict but you will need a little discipline to see it all through. Why not start this with a friend if you know some one else who could benefit from this. Being overweight doesn't mean you should be treated any differently, but health professionals like myself who love to help others want to outline to you what you can do to get help and achieve a good level of health.
