So the eagerly anticipated tennis grand slam that is Wimbledon, is finally upon us! There has been more hype in the UK about this particular tournament than in previous years mainly because of Andy Murray being the reigning champion, and for his current rich vein of form. People don’t need much of an excuse to have a dig at us Brits, but passion and enthusiasm from the crowds is one thing they can’t lay at our doorstep.
Another thing we can’t be criticised for is out attention to detail, I’ve been to Wimbledon and Roland Garros in Paris, and although both are immaculately kept, there is no comparison when it comes to fine attention to detail… and that’s a fact! Like or loathe tennis, take a look at the discipline of the ball boys/girls, check out the cleanliness of the walkways and stands, and if you can, have a look at the grass…just immaculate! In fact, an interesting little post on the official Wimbledon site explains how one of the groundkeepers sole job in the final days leading up to Wimbledon was to go around every single net pole and hand trim the grass WITH SCISSORS so that the finish is PERFECT!
You can’t see the grass finish around the net post sockets from your armchairs at home, but Head Groundsman Neil Stubley can and he knows that if you truly want that wow factor, then you’ve got to take care of the finest of detail.
Here’s to a great competition. LET’S DO THIS ANDY!
