‘Witch’ Protein This Halloween : What Supplements To Put Into Your Fitness Cauldron!

OK, so there are no ‘Magic potions’ per se in the supplement world, lets be clear on that, but what you do have at your disposal is a range of supplements that act cumulatively if applied in the right amounts, at the right time. When you come to consider your next supplement haul, be wise, be structured, and be informed...certain supplements enable you to train harder for longer, some help you to replenish and recover, some help you to grow whilst some go around your body protecting and preserving. If you haven’t already, now’s the time to get your own cauldron, compile your own witches potion chant, and reach your health and fitness goals this Halloween

So using the Shakespearian Witches chant as inspiration…

Fillet of a fenny snake,

In the cauldron boil and bake;

Eye of newt and toe of frog,

Wool of bat and tongue of dog,

Adder's fork and blindworm's sting,

Lizard's leg and howlet's wing.

For charm of powerful trouble,

Like a hell-broth boil and bubble.

~William Shakespeare~

Here’s a Discount Supplements chant to get your cauldron of muscle building and fat burning goals simmering along nicely…

Fillet of a protein shake,

Don’t forget your creatine for goodness sake;

Mustn’t exceed the dosage or you’ll end up on the bog,

Wanna strip off fat, we’ve got the missing cog,

A fat metabolising agent will promote fat burning.

To avoid harm and overtraining trouble,

Get a multi-vitamin down you at the double.

Double, double toil and trouble;
Fire burn and cauldron bubble.

~Discount Supplements~

So simmering away in the Discount Supplements cauldron is an ultimate Halloween supplement stack, so let's delve a little deeper into what makes this concoction right for you...

Whey Protein

This is the basic ingredient of any supplement stack, and would grace any self respecting Witches cauldron because of it’s dense concentration of amino acids, particularly the Branched Chain Amino Acids (BCAAs). Muscle protein synthesis is significantly increased if whey protein is consumed within 30mins after exercise. The BCAAs are key to minimising muscle catabolism (breakdown) during exercise meaning muscle is preserved and growth is maximised!

Creatine

Creatine’s effects are pretty much irrefutable, it is the unique energy source to your muscles meaning it can’t be poached for energy by your other organs etc which enables you to train harder, for longer! Creatine acutely increases the physical size of your muscles via a process known as osmosis, this fluid shift is a secondary effect of a rise in solute (creatine). Many might say that a supplement that causes a physical increase in muscle size and bulk within days is pretty damn MAGIC! As with any supplement, take care to not exceed the recommended dosage, but in creatine’s case, do be sure to rest from it after 4 weeks of consumption to avoid undue strain on your kidneys. Check out our previous article on best practice for creatine supplementation.

Fat Burners – Burn fat at the stake!

Fat burners contain a variety of ingredients designed to deliver optimal ratios of key fat burning ingredients, examples include PhD Lean DegreeMaximuscle ThermobolOptimum Nutrition Thermo Cuts or Grenade Thermo Detonator (to name a few). My colleague Scott recently blogged on how ‘Fat Burners Aren’t A Magic Pill’, so although it’s Halloween, I’m afraid to say these fat burning agents have to be combined with a healthy balanced diet and regular physical activity in order to deliver the desired effects…FAT BURNING! The active ingredients such as CLA, L-Carnitine, Green Tea Extract, Green coffee, Caffeine and Cayenne pepper all boost a process known as lipolysis, aka fat burning.

Multi-Vitamin and Mineral

Vitamins and minerals are integral to regulating cell growth, maintaining structure and function, controlling energy metabolism, monitoring cell degradation (breakdown) and maximising the utilisation of various macronutrients (protein, carbohydrate and fat) e.g. zinc is needed for the formation and breakdown of protein, whilst vitamin D is integral to the absorption of Calcium.

A supplement regime without a multi-vitamin & mineral is like a Witch without a broomstick!
