Yacon Syrup : Is It Time You Gave It A Try?

I’ve been hearing a lot about this Yacon syrup recently, the Peruvian ‘apple of the earth’ (because it resembles a potato) is another ‘new but not new’ natural sweetener. This sweetener is another alternative to other natural, low calorie and low glycaemic index sweeteners such as stevia and monk fruit…and a much better alternative to the plethora of artificial sweeteners out there. Looking like a potato and tasting like an apple, Yacon is a novel and natural option for many.

Is it a sweetening method that is at risk of abuse i.e. the excessive consumption could cause stomach upsets and potentially insulin resistance if consumed to excess. However, if used sensibly as an alternative to sugar, Yacon really could offer health conserving benefits. Better still this sweetener doesn’t have any bitter undertones, in fact it has been described as having a sweet apple taste with the tannin tang of tea.
