What is whey protein powder?

Whey protein powder is a whey protein supplement derived from milk during the cheese-making process. It naturally contains all nine essential amino acids, making it a complete protein. It is especially rich in leucine, which plays a key role in muscle growth and repair. Whey protein is quickly digested and absorbed, making whey protein powder one of the most popular choices for a post-workout protein boost for the fast recovery of muscles.

Whey protein comes in various forms, including whey concentrate, isolate, and hydrolysate. Each differs in levels of fats and carbohydrates and the concentration of protein. Whey powder is a quick and convenient way to get more protein into your diet and achieve your desired fitness goals.

The Benefits of whey protein

Whey protein has a number of great benefits, including:

  • Builds and maintains lean muscle - Whey is packed with branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), which help stimulate muscle protein synthesis post training

  • Supports faster recovery - Whey protein is absorbed faster than some other types of protein, such as casein. Faster absorption means faster delivery of nutrients to tired muscles, helping reduce soreness and supporting muscle repair

  • Aids weight management - Whey protein is an easy, low-calorie way to feel fuller for longer and stop cravings taking hold

  • Convenient nutrition - Easily mixed with milk or water, whey protein powder is perfect for on-the-go shakes, breakfast smoothies, or a post-gym pick-me-up

Types of whey protein

We stock a full range of whey protein supplements to suit your fitness goals, budget, and dietary needs.

Whey protein isolate (WPI)

WPI is ultra-filtered for maximum purity, and typically has a 90%+ protein content. It is low in carbs, fats, and lactose, making it ideal for lean muscle and sensitive stomachs. Our Optimum Nutrition Gold Standard Whey contains 24g protein, 1.3g fat, and 1.4g carbs per serving.

Clear whey isolate

Creating light, refreshing, juice-like protein drinks, clear whey isolate is perfect post-workout or summer training. Applied Nutrition Clear Whey is a non-milky formulation with 21g protein, 0g sugar, and less than 90 kcal per serving.

Whey protein concentrate (WPC)

Less filtered than isolate, with around 70–80% protein, WPC is often a more budget-friendly protein, and is creamier in taste. The Health Project Ultimate Whey Protein delivers – 21g protein, 1.2g fat, and 109 calories per 30g serving.

Mass gainers

High carb whey protein, or mass gainers, are designed for bulking or high-calorie needs. It combines whey with carbs for increased energy and recovery. The Health Project All In One Mass Gainer comes with added creatine and serves up 241 kcals, 30g of protein and 2.9g of fat.

Diet whey protein

Diet protein is for those who want to lose weight, gain or are in a cutting phase. They commonly include added fat-burning ingredients like CLA or green tea extract. Applied Nutrition Diet Whey Protein has just 82 calories per 25g serving, with added CLA, L-Carnitine and Green Tea.

Frequently Asked Questions

How is whey protein made?

Whey protein is made through a multi-step process that looks like this:

  1. First, milk is pasteurised and an enzyme like rennet is added to separate the liquid whey from the solid curds
  2. The liquid whey, containing a mix of proteins, is collected and goes through various filtration processes to concentrate the protein. Fats, carbohydrates, and other unwanted components are removed, resulting in a high-protein liquid
  3. The concentrated whey protein solution is dried using techniques like spray drying to produce a fine powder
  4. The final product, whey protein powder, may be further processed or flavoured to create different types of whey protein supplements, such as whey protein isolate or whey protein concentrate.

Does whey protein make you gain weight?

When used as part of a blanched diet, whey protein won't make you gain weight. You gain weight when you consume more calories than you expend. If you’re adding whey protein shakes on top of your usual meals and eating in a calorie surplus, it could lead to weight gain. If your goal is to build muscle, this can be beneficial. However, to lose or maintain weight use whey as a low-calorie snack, a meal replacement, or to support a high-protein, calorie-controlled diet.

Is whey protein good for building muscle?

Whey protein is highly effective for building muscle due to its rich profile of essential amino acids, particularly leucine, which plays a vital role in muscle protein synthesis. These amino acids repair tiny tears in muscle fibres caused by training, and then rebuild them stronger than before. Whey protein is rapidly absorbed by the body, further aiding muscle recovery and growth. Combined with regular resistance training and a balanced diet, whey protein provides a convenient and efficient way to increase your protein intake for faster muscle repair and development.

When should I take whey protein?

Most people take whey protein powder immediately after a workout. Muscles are particularly receptive to nutrients during this time, which helps in muscle repair and growth. Taking a whey protein supplement at this time can enhance protein synthesis and lead to improved recovery and muscle gains. You might also take whey protein in the morning to kickstart your metabolism and provide a source of high-quality protein on waking, or it can also be used throughout the day as a quick protein source if you find it challenging to consume enough protein just through food.

How much whey protein should I take?

For most people who engage in regular strength training or bodybuilding, consuming about 1.2 to 2.2 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day is generally recommended. The exact amount of whey protein you should take depends on several factors, including:

  • Your fitness goals
  • Body weight
  • Dietary protein intake
  • Overall health

The average person needs around 0.8g of protein per kg of body weight, while an older person wanting to avoid muscle loss may look to consume roughly 1.0–1.2g per kg per day.

Are there side effects of taking whey protein?

The vast majority of people do not experience any side effects when using whey protein powder. Any side effects that do occur are usually the result of other digestive issues such as lactose intolerance. For those individuals, bloating, cramping, and diarrhoea may be common. Additionally, consuming excessive amounts of whey protein may put stress on the kidneys for those with pre-existing kidney conditions. If too much whey protein is taken at the detriment of other nutrients, it could lead to nutrient imbalance.

Whey protein can be a convenient source of high-quality protein but, as with everything, moderation and balance are key. With whey protein powder, always read the label and  follow the recommendations carefully. This will limit the risk of any side effects.
